Everything about e-liquids expiration

Have you ever been in a situation where you are about to drip-in the e-liquid into your vaping device and you just notice that your e-liquid has already passed its expiration date days ago?

Well, you are not alone in this! However, whatever the case may be, please be careful NOT to use expired e-liquids.

Shelf Life of an e-liquid:

Like most perishables, e-liquids too have a shelf life. This is just to let the users know that the quality of the e-liquids after the expiry date might not be the same.

Any e-liquid basically consists of three major ingredients- nicotine, PG, VG and some flavouring substances on top of it. If you store your e-liquids correctly, they will easily last for 2 years without any problem.

It also highly depends on the type and flavour of the e-liquids you are using. Eventually, it's up to you to decide whether an e-liquid should be disposed or not?

How to know if your e-liquid is expired?

There are a few factors that may indicate whether your e-liquid has expired or not?

  • Storage

Usually, e-liquids are supposed to be stored in a cool and dry place. If you don't take care of that, your vape juice may lose its taste and flavour way before its expiry date.

  • Separation in the liquid

Like many packed liquid commodities, you need to make sure that before you drip your e-liquid into the mod, you should shake it well. If the contents in the liquid are still separated, you better get rid of that e-liquid since it becomes unfit for use.

  • Aroma

Take a sniff of the vape juice. If it smells foul or unpleasant and looks weird, it's time to say goodbye to your e-juice.

The best way to store your e-liquid

How can you store your e-liquid in a best possible way? You should store it in a cool, dry place where it isn't exposed to direct sunlight.

You can easily find these instructions on the seal and packaging of the bottle as well. This is important because direct exposure to sunlight may cause fermentation in the liquid and this may break and spoil its taste, smell and consistency.

Avoid placing e-liquids near the windows or out in the open. Store them in a closed cabinet away from sunlight, in a cool place. You can also check the health of your e-liquid by observing its colour. If it gets too dark, it has gone bad and you should probably get rid of it.

E-liquids with nicotine content

Nicotine-based e-liquids have shorter shelf life than nicotine free vape juices. This can happen since nicotine itself is perishable and has an expiration date.

You can make this out by noticing if your e-liquid still gives you the same amount of nicotine hit? If it does not then, it can mean that the vape juice might have expired.

How should you get rid of the expired e-juice?

If you have e-juice bottles that have gone stale and you are planning to discard them, you should do this responsibly.

Make sure that you dilute the liquid before you dispose of it in the drain. Apart from this, you can also use a diluted spray of the e-liquid in your garden. Nicotine acts as a repellent for bugs and pests.

Therefore, unless you are too desperate, it is for the best that you should avoid using stale vape juices. There are no known side effects or medical complications of using an expired e-juice but it is advisable to get rid of an expired e-liquid bottle and start with a fresh one to have a satisfactory vaping experience.
